Turning a Passive System into Active Protection in Berwick, ME

Jan C. in Berwick, Maine already had a passive radon system installed as part of the home's construction, but passive systems don't always provide enough airflow to reduce radon levels effectively. To improve performance and create active radon mitigation, the system was upgraded with a professionally installed fan and monitoring components.

One of the advantages of this project was that the home's 4-inch PVC passive stack was already in place, providing an excellent foundation for the upgrade. The existing junction box was located directly next to the PVC pipe, making the electrical conversion straightforward and efficient.

The project included an electrical outlet conversion, transforming the nearby junction box into a dedicated outlet for the radon fan. We also installed a sealed sump pit lid to help reduce radon entry through the sump opening and added an audible alarm to provide ongoing system monitoring and homeowner peace of mind.

By converting the passive system into an active radon mitigation system, the home now benefits from continuous suction beneath the foundation, helping move radon safely out of the home before it can enter the living space.

Sometimes the best radon system is already partially built—you just need the right upgrades to make it work. Another Maine homeowner now has active protection and greater confidence in their indoor air quality.

Radon Mitigation in Hiram, Maine 04041

In Hiram, Maine, a homeowner faced a serious concern—elevated radon levels of 50.0 pCi/L, far exceeding the EPA's action level. Concerned about the health risks linked to radon exposure, they turned to Maine Radon and Water Treatment for a reliable solution. The team installed an exterior radon mitigation system featuring an RP-145 fan, carefully positioning the system 10 feet from the propane tank and taking precautions around the propane line. To ensure durability, plastic was used to seal an existing hole near the water line. With the system in place and the manometer reading 1.8, the home is now equipped to reduce radon levels effectively.
